Alot of people do not know that the Boston Marathon originally started in Ashland, but was later moved to Hopkington to extend it to the official distance of 26.2 miles from Boston. Ashland is a residential town 22 miles west of Boston and is known as being the halfway point between Worcester and Boston. Since the 1980's Ashland has truly grown from a rural town to a thriving suburb of Boston.

Ashland was settled in the late 1700's and incorporated in 1846. The creation of the railroad between Albany and Boston was one of the major reasons for the incorporation of the town. Ashland used to be primarily a farming town and the birth of the electric clock also happened here.
